The man, Jaffer (35) and wife Shemi (26), hailing from Palode in the southern Indian state of Kerala, left a suicide note, but nothing was specified in that. According to Naseer, a relative of the deceased, he still could not understand the reason. “The police showed us the suicide note and we recognised the handwriting as Shemi’s. They had written that nobody was responsible for their death. They instructed us to send the money they left in the room to Jaffer’s mother in India,” he said.

“They mentioned that they wanted their last rites to be conducted in Dubai itself. We are waiting for the body to be released by the authorities after completing the legal formalities. The burial will be conducted in Dubai,” said Naseer. A source from the Dubai Police confirmed the suicide and said: “The investigation is in progress. We do not think any third party is involved. We think some family problem could be the reason.”

Jaffer had been working in the Zina Decoration Company, located in Al Quoz, for the last 15 years as a foreman. Speaking to Khaleej Times, a colleague of Jaffer said: “He was always a pleasant person and I still cannot believe he committed suicide. He came to work on Thursday and seemed happy. On Saturday, he did not report for work, and we were informed in the evening that he had killed himself.”

According to the neighbours, both of them were not very outgoing people. “They never talked much about themselves. We have no clue about the motive,” said a neighbour.
