Misuse of position by officials must end

A RECENT car accident brought to light a white collar worker’s misappropriation of public funds. Described as a senior official, the man used the car — sent as a gift to the medical centre in a far-flung area — for his and his family’s personal work. Instead, he sent his old car to the centre. This case shows that the trend to achieve transparency should be categorically supported, without retraction.

The incident unravelled how the employee took advantage of his position, as reported in the Arabic daily Al Bayan on Saturday. It also revealed other irregularities committed by that official. Due to his influential position, the organisation he supervises rents out the apartments he and his family members own.

Therefore, the Bureau of Accountability has to double its efforts to curb such kinds of menace; the ministries should emulate the Ministry of Labour, which has persistently stuck to its fair stand of fixing the number of trade licences issued to each and every employee at the ministry. The ministry also rejects any favouritism and interference by senior officials in the affairs and work of the committee charged with work permits.

It is certain that any official who wants to see transparency achieved would face ferocious opposition from the beneficiaries of status quo. But the righteous will triumph in the end. That is the law of justice.
