The close-knit community of Middlesex University, Dubai, observed its first minute of silence at 11am on Sunday to mark the tragic passing of two of its well-loved students, who were killed alongside their friend in a car crash on Friday night.
The three Malayalees, 20-year-olds Ashmid Ashraf and Shifaam Musthafa - both students at the University - and 21-year-old Mohammed Sunoon, may be gone, but were certainly not forgotten by their friends and teachers.
"We marked the first minute of silence at 11am right before the singing semi finals of the University's Youth Festival," Communications officer for the Student Council, Ibrahim Hanif, told Khaleej Times.
The poignant silence was marked by all in attendance including participants, members of the audience and volunteers.
And all the coordinators and volunteers of the youth festival - which runs under the slogan 'Celebrating the Spirit of Youth' - wore black ribbons on their arm to show their respects for the boys.
"At 2pm we also observed a second minute of silence for Ashmid and Shifaam on behalf of the student council," Hanif added.
A small shrine commemorating the two students has been set up in the university where students have been leaving flowers next to two framed pictures of the victims.
The accident took place when the boys were returning late on Friday night from a friend's place in Al Madam.
Throughout the university's youth festival, which concludes on March 24, Hanif said all 23 remaining sessions will first be marked with a minute's silence for the boys.
