The donation has been offered in appreciation of the role played by the East Sussex County Council as the host for the UAE technical training project — UK, which is based in Bexhill-on-sea, a coastal town in East Sussex.
The director of the project said that the UAE President had decided to make the donation to express his appreciation for the warm welcome offered by the people of East Sussex to the technical training project and the UAE nationals taking part in it.
The project director announced the donation during a graduation ceremony held on Thursday at the project centre for the 11th group of military technicians.
The graduation ceremony was attended by Major Gen. Mohammed Hilal Surour Al Ka’abi, deputy chief of staff of the UAE Armed Forces, the Duke of Kent, representing Britain’s Queen Elizabeth, Phyllida Stewart-Roberts, the lord lieutenant of East Sussex, the British ambassador to the UAE, Edward Oakden, and a number of senior British officials.
After the ceremony, guests were given a tour of an exhibition showing some of the projects undertaken by the UAE students during their training programme.
The technical training project, its director said, is a practical embodiment of Shaikh Khalifa’s vision to promote cultural understanding, dialogue and tolerance.
The project was originally devised in the 1990s by Gen. Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, beginning with a first batch of 200 students. “It has now been developed into a fully-fledged partnership between the UAE and the UK,” the project’s director said.
“The new friendships created will definitely provide substantial momentum to the long-standing friendly relations between the two countries,” he added. Also speaking during the ceremony, the duke of Kent said the project would help to further develop cooperation between the two countries.
