Trivandrum: The processions organised by Communist Party of India- Marxist that heads the opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala on the Sree Krishna Jayanthi day in Kerala has kicked off a controversy.
While the party leadership termed the processions organised under the auspices of its children's organisation, Balasangham, as part of the Onam celebrations, a section of the party and some of its own allies have viewed it as a deliberate attempt to drag the religion into politics for political gains. Kanam Rajendran, state secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI), the second largest constituent of the LDF, said that he could not accept the CPM version as the Onam celebrations in the state were over a week ago.
"Spirituality and revolution will not go together. We have given freedom to the cadres who believe in God to follow their faith, but we will not allow anybody to organize any religious functions under the party platform," said the CPI leader.
Several supporters and sympathisers of the CPI (M) have also come out openly saying that the celebration of the religious festival was incompatible with the party's atheistic and materialistic ideology that the party adheres to and felt that it would alienate the secular sections from the party.
