Jebel Jais road will be opened this week after finishing maintenance works, said a senior official at the department of public works in Ras Al Khaimah. The road was blocked for public safety during the heavy showers.
Ahmad Muhammad Al Hammadi, director-general of the department, said 303 million gallons of water was drained following the showers in the emirate.
The emergency teams handled 969 rain-related reports during the period, he added. "A total of 831 reports were about water ponds, while the others were on uprooted trees, fallen rocks, cut roads, and landslides. Our teams attended to eight reports on uprooted trees and lamp posts, and three traffic signals which stopped working."
He said that more than 80 machines were used to reinforce 84 sand areas and 43 landslides affected by the downpour.
"Accumulated water was collected by tankers in 5,307 trips. Seventy pumping machines were also used in draining rainwater off the roads. All water collected has been stored in special ground reservoirs," said Al Hammadi. "The department, in collaboration with the RAK municipality, is amending the currents of the 20m-deep Naqb Valley, which can store up to two million cubic metres on a total area of 100,000sqm, to prevent the flooding of the nearby Fahleen area."
