When 30-year-old Nazema Awjein Sayyad suffered a renal failure and was advised a kidney transplant, her family was completely lost. They didn't know what to do. It was then that Nazema's mother-in-law rose to the occasion and donated her kidney to save her.
Batul Haji Sayyad, the 50-year-old woman, said, "I decided to donate my kidney as I realised that it will save three lives - my daughter-in-law, son and grandson."
Today, Nazema has virtually got a second life and feels indebted to Batul for it.
The transplant was performed at Pune's Jehangir Hospital on June 15, reported Hindustan Times. Nazema, who has one child, had been a patient of nephrologist Dr Sriniwas Ambike since February 2016, the report said.
Nazema reeled under a thyroid disorder during her pregnancy and her blood pressure shot up. "I was asked to do a test and my creatinine levels were at 5.6 (very high). I had to move to Pune to get dialysis undertaken twice a week. My mother-in-law had to take care of my son," Nazema was quoted as saying in the report.
Dr Deepak Kirpekar, the operating surgeon, reportedly said: "We have always heard about the implicit rivalry between the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. Here, Batul decided to save her daughter-in-law's life."
What's amazing is that their blood groups matched. And so the surgery turned out to be relatively easy.
