Finally, Indian expats across the globe can have their say on the long-standing demand of NRI voting by taking part in an online survey.
Neeta Bhushan, Charge d'Affaires, Indian Embassy, UAE, on Monday urged the expat population to register their views on the survey portal www.everyvotecounts.in.
"The Election Commission has launched an online survey for overseas Indians to engage them in the electoral process. The survey-cum-competition portal has been launched by Election Commission to the cause 'Every Indian Vote Count'," she said during a function to brief top Indian dignitaries, association heads and the media on the survey.
"There are many options available to choose from - proxy, postal, e-voting or by ballot at the embassy. So, participate in a big way and let the Indian government get a sense of your opinion," she said.
Indians can earn 'democracy points' by participating in the survey that runs till the end of December.
The online competition will be over by November end. The function was a personal initiative taken by the Charge d'Affaires.
"Yes, I wanted to let the expats know about this website and also generate support for the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention," she told Khaleej Times.
She urged social welfare associations and corporates in the UAE to register for the convention that will be held from January 7 to 9 in Bengaluru.
"It will be an eye-opening event. The charges are nominal. We should be there in good number," she said. "It's an occasion for us to show the presence of the UAE in India."
Embassy's First Secretary (Community Affairs) Dinesh Kumar said: "Those interested can log onto pbdindia.gov.in and pay online to register for the event.
"If associations register as a group, they can avail discount up to 50 per cent."
The normal charges are $250 and $100 for the youth, who will be having a separate day to put in their views and participate in discussion.
