The 14th national environment campaign 'Clean Up UAE' drive made its way from Dubai to Sharjah on Monday.
The campaign took off with around 3,500 'green warriors' in full gear equipped with cotton gloves, caps and biodegradable plastic bags, dedicated to collect the maximum amount of trash.
Over 22 tonnes of trash was collected at over 36 locations so far.
Opening the event at Sharjah, Habiba Al Marashi, chairperson of Emirates Environmental Group, said the week-long campaign will dock at every emirate in the country.
Al Marashi, said: "With the celebrations of National Day still fresh in air, there could not be a better time to undertake such an act of unity between all the seven emirates and major cities."
She added: "Today, the UAE is at the forefront of economic and social progress not only in our region but globally. The commitment to environmental security and sustainability, evidenced by the numerous projects and initiatives being launched by the government, private sector, and research and scientific institutions made this possible. The community has, on its part, extended its support to this movement, and plays a critical role in making environment protection everyone's shared responsibility."
