Colonel Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Deputy Director of Dubai Traffic Police, said the fatality figure had been determined on the basis of an analysis of last year's traffic accidents.
He said a traffic campaign aimed at encouraging the use of seat-belts by motorists and passengers had been launched. It will continue till the end of this week.
He said traffic police personnel had been asked to speak to motorists at intersections and distribute printed material highlighting the importance of wearing the belt. Failure to wear seat-belts by drivers and front-seat passengers carries a fine.
During the campaign, however, traffic cops are not imposing fines on erring drivers. Instead they have been giving advice on the use of seat-belts. “Our campaigns have proved to be friendly and beneficial,” Col. Al Zafeen said.
He also said that motorists should not allow children aged under 10 years to sit in the front seat.
