According to an official at the Roads Department, the ITS project, the implementation of which began in mid-2004 in co-ordination with Dubai's Traffic Police, will provide real-time integrated traffic management and traveller information for the main road network in the emirate, and greatly help reduce congestion on the roads while also improving road safety.
By early 2006, the core of the ITS project, Falcon or Freeway and Local Co-ordinated Operation Network will be fully operational, officials revealed.
The ITS, through a Dynamic Integrated Navigation System (Dins), will help motorists to choose shorter and more convenient routes and avoid bottlenecks created by accidents of peak hour rush. The first of its kind in the region, the system, which covers freeways, arteries, bridges and tunnels, has extensive traffic monitoring and management capabilities, and conveys real-time traffic information to motorists through different medium, including dynamic message signs (DMS), the Internet and wireless services direct to a vehicle's inbuilt navigation system.
