A questionnaire approved by the Ministry of Environment and Water will be distributed among the students as part of the ministry’s ‘UAE is free from plastic bags’ initiative.
The decision was taken as a result of a community opinion poll where around 85 per cent of the people agreed to support the ministry’s efforts to cut down on the use of non-biodegradable plastic bags while 82 per cent of the people were positive that plastic bag usage can be cut down.
The Education and Orientation Department at the ministry has split the education programme into two phases. The first phase aims to distribute the forms to students in Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah and target other emirates later, and the second phase will host introductory workshops, educational contests and see hand-outs of jute bags, sponsored by the Union National Bank. School visits will also be organised to discuss the dangers of non-decomposable plastic bags and promote the use of alternative, eco-friendly bags.
The ‘UAE is free from plastic bags’ campaign started in October 2009 and has been actively running to significantly reduce the country’s use of plastic bags by the end of next year.
