More than 9,000 cybercrime reports have been filed by the public through the Dubai Police's E-Crime platform, since its launch last year, the authorities said on Wednesday.
Allowing residents to submit complaints and cases just by logging in to www.ecrime.ae has "contributed significantly to the police's rapid response to cybercrimes and has made communications faster and simpler", Capt Abdullah Al Shehhi, deputy director of the cybercrime department at the General Department of Criminal Investigation, said at a Press conference.
Since its launch in May 2018, E-Crime has made it easier for residents to report cases such as blackmailing, cyber extortion, hacking, Internet fraud, and online identity theft, among others.
Out of the 9,046 online reports, 1,277 were requests for assistance on hacked social media accounts. The police were able to recover a total of 1,177 WhatsApp accounts, 90 Instagram pages, and 10 Facebook and SnapChat accounts.
The Dubai Police vow to keep on innovating and enhancing their smart services, especially as digital transformation continues to sweep across the world, Capt Al Shehhi said.
