Brigadier Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, director-general of DNRD, recently opened the centre in the presence of Venu Rajamony, Consul-General of India, and other officials.
Speaking on the occasion, Brigadier Al Marri said that DNRD had so far issued 2,90,387 exit passes for illegals. "More than half of the people who have got exit passes, have already left the country. We have regularised the visa status of 29,909 illegal workers so far. We need skilled people here but we want people to work legally," Al Marri said.
"The new centre will help speed up the process of issuing of the exit passes to Indians. This will reduce the rush in Jumeirah," he said.
The centre will function every day between 8am and 5pm except on Fridays and Saturdays. Equipped with eye scan and finger print facilities, the centre will remain operational till August 25.
Venu Rajamony, Consul-General of India, said: "There is a possibility of opening a similar facility in Sharjah by next week."
