More than half a dozen offices of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) will sport a charging station for electric cars by the end of this year, Dewa chief told Khaleej Times on Sunday.
“We already initiated a tender for Dewa (to set up charging stations) in different locations,” MD and CEO of Dewa Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said after a Press conference to announce the Emirates Energy Awards.
“We are the ones who initiated the project ... We will start with more than six Dewa offices and branches,” he said.
The initiative to set up charging stations for zero-emission electric cars was announced as part of the ‘Smart Dubai’ concept introduced by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Dewa has chalked out a plan to set up 100 charging stations for electric cars across Dubai in two years. Al Tayer said charging stations in Dewa offices would be among the first to start operations “by the end of the year”.
Dubai Silicon Oasis will be the first community to introduce electric car charging stations, he said. “We had ... signed a memorandum of understanding with them. They will be setting up the stations in the smart city. We are going to have more memorandum signing ceremonies with other developers soon,” Al Tayer added.
Though electric cars do not need the normal maintenance works required by the internal combustion cars, long hours of charging them is a big concern among users. Easy access to charging stations across the emirate is expected to prompt car users to switch to electric cars, thereby reducing the energy consumption and pollution in Dubai.
