Cop Pleads Not Guilty to Taking Bribe for Passing Drugs to Prisoner

DUBAI — A court on Thursday began hearing a case against a police sergeant accused of accepting a bribe of Dh2,000 for handing over a packet to an inmate of the Dubai Central Jail and abusing 
his position.

The packet contained drugs.

The 23-year-old defendant pleaded not guilty in the Court of First Instance.

According to the records, he was arrested on May 4 this year and referred to the Al Hibab police station after an officer saw him handing over a packet that contained drugs to a person serving a jail term for drug abuse.

During police interrogation, the sergeant confessed that he had been handing over packets to the inmate since 
February.

He said the driver of the inmate came to him on May 4 and asked him to hand over a packet to the inmate. He agreed to take the packet inside the jail without knowing the contents. He accepted Dh2,000 from the driver.

The police referred him to the prosecution on charges of selling drugs. However, after its own interrogation and investigation, the prosecution referred him to the court on charges of accepting a bribe, abusing his position and 
carrying drugs.

When asked by the presiding judge, the defendant denied the charges.

A police major testified that the defendant had confessed to him in front of a superior officer that he had met the prison inmate’s driver and took a small packet inside after accepting Dh2,000.

A lieutenant at the jail testified that the defendant worked as an assistant at the monitoring room of the Central Jail. In his position, the defendant could meet prison inmates but was not supposed to hand over any personal belongings or food to the inmates. It was not part of his job to bring anything from outside into the jail.
