The Dubai Charity Association has started distributing Ramadan Meer (foodstuff packets) to over 15,000 low-income families.
The contributed food packets at the Muhaisnah area are worth Dh1.7 million this year, according to a top official with the organisation.
Ahmad Mohammed Mismaar, secretary-general of the Dubai Charity Association, said they had earlier alerted the eligible families via SMS to avoid any possible congestion or delay. "The Ramadan Meer basket consists of the basic foodstuff, including rice, flour, sugar, cooking oil, and others."
The Ramadan Meer is one of the leading charity projects of the association that runs during the holy month to benefit the indigent and low-income families and orphans in the UAE and 28 countries worldwide, he added.
"The 37-year-old association, founded in 1980 under the name Al-Urwatu Al-Wuthqa, had efficiently spent Dh20 million on a variety of philanthropic schemes for the benefit of 5,000 disadvantaged families last Ramadan."
Thousands of Iftar meals have been contributed for free in the UAE and globally, he added. "Free Iftar meals worth Dh1.5 million are distributed in 50 mosques across the UAE; 100 meals each."
Up to Dh10,000 have been allocated for mass Iftar meals in each and every mosque abroad, he said.
