Speaking to Khaleej Times, Lt. Jamal Obaid, head of the Radar Unit in Sharjah Traffic and Licence Department, said the cameras function like radars, they help the police to monitor and manage traffic as well as track the reckless drivers who jump red lights and exceed speed limits. Since their installation last month, 150 violations a day are being recorded.
He pointed out that the Traffic Department will fix new speed limits at the intersections where the cameras have been installed. More cameras will be installed after the completion of Al Wahda expansion.
Lt. Obaid said the Traffic Department in coordination with the operations room have formed a team to work round the clock to control traffic on Sharjah's roads.
