Horror flicks are once again in vogue in Tamil cinema steered by the success of Pizza. Earlier this year, Demonte Colony also turned out to be sleeper hit sending the right note of chill into viewers' hearts.
Now it is the turn of Nayanthara to scare the living daylights out of you with her new film Maya. Nayanthara plays the title role of Maya Mathews in the film directed by debutant Ashwin Saravanan, who said in a recent interview that it was her love for the horror genre that helped him in making the film.
Also starring Aari, who wowed audiences with an inspiring performance in Nedunchaalai, the film unravels through a writer, whose new novel is inspired by the happenings in a mental asylum that once existed in a wasteland just outside the city.
The incidents in the novel and what transpired within the mental asylum seem to take several parallels before the protagonist realises that he is on a journey with supernatural forces for company.
Maya is tailor-made for Nayanthara and while it does strip away a lot of the glamour associated with the actress, it brings out the performer in her. And Nayanthara has proved her mettle as an actress including in director R Shyamaprasad's Elektra.
The director, only 25 years old, says the film is not meant to keep the audience on a perpetual scare trip but to create an emotional bonding too with the story of Maya. How the scares and emotional narrative will balance out will unfold this week at theatres.
