“This marks an improvement in the level of traffic safety in Abu Dhabi,” said Brigadier Hussein Ahmed Al Harthi, Director of Traffic and Patrols. “There has been a three per cent decline in accidents that resulted in casualties. If we look at fatalities per 10,000, they dropped by 31 per cent.”
Al Harthi said the decrease in the number of accidents and casualties at a time the number of vehicles on the emirate’s roads is increasing is encouraging. In the first three months of the year, 857,114 vehicles were registered. The same period last year, the number was 830,148.
The accidents in the first quarter of this year ranged from run-overs, collisions and vehicles turning turtle. Collisions caused the highest casualties with 33 deaths. There were 22 run-over deaths.
The official attributed road safety improvement to the implementation of a comprehensive plan called 6E+. It comprises engineering, awareness, education, enforcement, emergency, evaluation and community partnership engagement. Radars too played a key role in reducing the number of accidents. Recently 185 new radars have been installed on Abu Dhabi and Al Ain roads.
The directorate is involved in an ongoing safety campaign that includes lectures, trainings, distribution of safety flyers and booklets as well as field visits by officers to schools and public and private sector establishments to educate people on road safety.
The safety campaign targets both motorists and pedestrians.
