The sense of security has increased to 98 per cent in Sharjah, with only 15 serious crimes being reported during the last year, the Sharjah Police have revealed. Serious crimes plummeted by 58.8 per cent per 100,000 people in 2018, it said.
The Sharjah Police have set objectives with sights on the future and are identifying problems, while assessing ways to solve them, said Brigadier General Abdullah Mubarak bin Amer, Deputy Commander of Sharjah Police. He was addressing Citizens Forum for 2019, organised by the Eastern Region Police Department, in Khor Fakkan city.
Brigadier General Mohammad Rashid Biyat, Director-General of Police Operations, said the year 2018 witnessed marked reduction in the reported crimes as 938 calls per 100,000 inhabitants were received. The police also resolved mysterious crimes reported against unknown people by 42 per cent.
The police had huge success in reducing serious and other crimes, he said, adding that the number of illegals and infiltrators - who enter the country through the eastern province - has come down due to public awareness. The thefts were also curbed during the last year in Kalba and other parts of the eastern region. Only a few minor thefts of some shops and commercial places were committed by illegal workers in 2018, the police official added. Brig Bayat stressed that the rate of drug abuse has declined as well during 2018, thanks to the efforts of anti-drug agencies.
Dubbing cybercrime as a major threat, Brig Bayat pointed out that due to the spread of technology, hacking of accounts by organised gangs has become a big concern. He contended that the police have carried out awareness campaigns warning citizens not to fall into the trap of these gangs. "We have urged banks, government institutions and private companies to secure their accounts," the police official said.
Brig Bayat pointed out that the police have completed the first phase of installation of security cameras in Sharjah. The second phase will be carried out in Al Dhaid and the eastern region, the third will cover all cities of the Emirate, and the fourth will include government institutions, he added.
Colonel Ali Al Kayed Al Hammoudi, director of the Eastern Region Police Department, said that the eastern province has the lowest rate of crime as compared to the other cities of the emirate of Sharjah. The number of road deaths decreased by 21 per cent last year. Police recorded only three road fatalities in the eastern province during the year 2018, he pointed out.
He explained that his administration has trained 100 guards from government institutions and schools on how to act at the crime scene and deal with emergency situations like fire accidents. It is also planning to organise an awareness campaign titled 'Towards a conscious society' - to be launched in May - to sensitise all segments of society about the importance of social communication, and keep away from spreading rumours that foul the environment.
