Traditionally, Ramadan is a quiet month, dedicated to prayer, fasting and helping others. But malls, hotels and other attractions in Abu Dhabi have gone the extra mile to make Ramadan a bit more special with various night entertainment and the odd, even extravagant promotions.
St. Regis Abu Dhabi, for example, has come up with Iftar in the sky. Groups of minimum 35 people may book their fast breaking in the majlis of the hotel's Abu Dhabi Suite. The glass majlis is suspended at 220 metres above the ground, connecting the two buildings of the Nation Towers
There is a private VIP elevator to reach the Abu Dhabi Suite on floor 48 and once here, the hotel promises a "myriad of Arabian delicacies". The price for breaking fast here is as exclusive as the location - Dh250 per person.
To book the entire suite, which only has three bedrooms, but comes with private spa, cinema and butler, it's a Dh25,875 affair to start with!
"Dh250 is not too bad actually, considering that most five star hotel restaurants offer Iftar buffets around Dh200 per person. To be honest, I would love to be able to try it out, but it is rather difficult to gather a group of 35 people to join me," said Mohammed Al Amri, an Emirati resident in Abu Dhabi.
"Later in the month, I will share some nice Iftars with friends outside, but now, in the first days of Ramadan, is always tradition for us to break fast at home, with the family," he added.
Another out of the ordinary idea for iftar is proposed by Jalboot. Abu Dhabi's private ferry service has come up with a special package where guests can break their fast at Hilton Abu Dhabi's La Terazza's Iftar buffet and then embark on an evening cruise of the Arabian Gulf.
Adorned with Arabesque décor and with soft instrumental Arabian music playing in the background, Jalboot boats will cruise around the Abu Dhabi Corniche during Ramadan.
La Terazza Iftar buffet will end at 8.30pm and the three night cruises, each lasting one hour, will take place from 10pm, 11pm and midnight. The package is priced at Dh150 per person, and the Jalboot ticket also entitles holders to avail 20 per cent discount at Hilton's Vasco's, Bocca and Royal Orchid, when booking for at least eight people.
Theatre shows, competitions, raffle draws and promotions for shoppers are offered by all malls in Abu Dhabi during Ramadan. The Mall at World Trade Centre Abu Dhabi, for example, is bringing the community together with a Ramadan bazaar.
Every weekend, from June 16 till July 8, there will be 30 stalls selling a range of products, from fashion, accessories and games to arts and crafts. Throughout the holly month, The Mall will also entertain children and their families with the live stage show The Magic Lamp of Aladdin.
There will also be interactive storytelling that reflect the values associated with Ramadan, henna applications and a face painting station for children. - silvia@khaleejtimes.com
