Speaking to Khaleej Times, Saif Al Shamsi, Deputy Director-General of Ajman Municipality, said that the engineers of the municipality have studied problems that caused the damages to the emirate during the last year’s rain season and have started to solve them by improving the drainage systems. The precautionary plan includes pavement and reconstruction of roads in some residential areas like Al Bustan and Al Naimia where people suffered last year from the mucky roads which posed a hazard to both children and elderly.
Al Shamsi pointed out that the engineers and workers are currently working to fix up areas in which last year pools of stagnant water remained for long period of times and affected the environment by bringing mosquitoes and other insects which could transmit disease from one person to another. They were also assigned to uproot problems at roundabouts to improve their drainage systems and reconstruct roads that were last year flooded with water and filled with muck consequently blocking most of the drainage networks in various areas.
“The work improving the drainage and road infrastructure is being carried out specially in residential areas where mud and water ponds blocked entrances of buildings during the last rain,” he added.
Al Shamsi said that as part of the precautionary measure, an extensive cooperation work will soon be arranged between the Municipality and Civil Defence Department with the aim of taking prompt action and immediate intervention for solving problems that may occur during the rains this year.
Staff from the Municipality’s Emergency Section will be also assigned to patrol the different areas in the emirate to allow prompt intervention for fixing probable defects on roads and streets in residential areas, he said adding: “The staff is also prepared to respond to public appeals for assistance during such emergency and time of rains.”
