The Sharjah Educational Council (SEC) has announced an initiative to educate the illiterate and provide all facilities to complete their education.
The move came after analysing the Sharjah census project which provided the statistics about the community.
According to the census, around 111 people - 80 seniors, 27 special needs people and four young people - expressed their willingness to complete their education.
Dr Saeed Misbah Al Kaabi, Chairman of the Executive Board of the SEC, explained that the council has already begun the procedures regarding the literacy drive.
He stressed that the council gives prime importance to education and that illiteracy is one of the biggest obstacles hindering development and economic and social reforms.
Ali Al Hosni, Member of the Council, explained the process for implementing the programme.
The Council got the names of the illiterates from the Department of Census and Development Community and educational specialists have been assigned to examine the cases individually. It then communicated with them to familiarise with their circumstances and advise them on how to complete their studies.
He said the council has also approached the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services and the Ministry of Education to admit the four children in public schools.
As far as the senior category is concerned, transportation will be provided for them to reach the council three days a week. And a teacher will be send to the houses of those seniors who are not able to travel.
