As part of a campaign to clean the cigarette butts off Dubai streets, Dubai Municipality gathered 30kg of cigarette waste from Sheikh Zayed Road in one day.
The waste management department also announced 40 new devices to gather cigarette butts and small-sized waste off corners hard to be reached by the conventional manual cleaning.
The new equipment will be operated with a system to deal with the waste scattered on roads, traffic lights, metro stations and green spaces.
Yaqub Al Ali, head of the specialised cleaning section at the waste management department, said that the department purchased modern equipment for small-scale waste. The equipment will save cleaners' time and effort, making the cleaning process faster.
He urged the public to avoid throwing cigarette butts on the road to avoid fines.
Discarding cigarette butts on roads, beaches or parks can attract a Dh500 fine.
