The workers — 142 Chinese workers from Abu Dhabi and 120 from Dubai — employed by Al Hamed Construction Company demanded that their wages pending for the past 18 months be paid.
“We have listened to lots of promises from the management regarding our dues being paid,” said Waurut Kou, an engineer with the company.
Qassim Jameel, Head of Inspection Department at the MoL, said that the ministry would probe the case and try to ensure an amicable settlement.
“We must be sure of the workers’ claims before taking any action against the company, especially as the company already paid leave salary to more than 600 workers yesterday and efforts were underway, according to our investigation, to give the rest of the workers their full rights,” said Jameel.
He added that the case was referred to the Inspection Department before going to the Labour Dispute Department in order to check whether or not the workers were being employed by another company under a sub-contract.
According to labour law, if a worker did not claim his or her wages for more than a year, his or her right to get it back shall be dropped.
