15-day Onam carnival starts

DUBAI - Nirapara Onachantha, the first Onam carnival in the UAE was inaugurated by the Indian Labour Counsel, K M Venugopalan, at the Ansar Plaza on Sunday evening.

The 15-day celebration includes cultural activities, events, sale of ethnic food and items and will mark the occasion of Onam that is synonymous with peace, prosperity, Onasdadya and making of floral carpets or pookalam by Malayalees worldwide.

"Onachantha is an interesting and unique concept and I am sure that it will be a major attraction for the people of Kerala," said Mr Venugoapalan.

"The non-stop activity starts from 4.00pm to 11.00pm everyday and includes 25 stalls that sell various items of specific interest to non-resident Keralites. We expect a daily traffic of a minimum of 5,000 people to visit this event," explained Asif Thottath, Director, Adva Advertising, organisers of the event.

"We have arranged a number of activities such as cultural programmes, competitions and game shows, radio and TV road shows, special media counters as well as medical counters offering free medical check-up and free eye tests as part of the Onachantha to make it a very special event for the 850,000 Malayalees across the UAE," said Habeeb Rahman, Director of Marketing, ADVA Advertising.

The cultural activities will be undertaken by various leading institutions like Kairali Kala Kendram, Kairali Arts Centre and Kalabhavan. A number of business houses like Nirapara, Kairali Jewellers, Empost, Parthas, Palm Beach Thattukada, Prime Vision Studio, UAE and Al Fardan Exchange, Smart Opticals Reem medical centre, Lipton, Tezkar and NRI Kerala.com are also presenting different promotions and making attractive offers during the 15-day extravaganza.
