At the cusp of a new decade, Dubai has managed to achieve phenomenal growth over the past 10 years, making the 2010s a fast-moving, quick-paced decade. Set for even more growth in terms of tourism and architecture in the new decade, here are few ways in which the emirate has changed over the past 10 years:
TOP OF THE WORLD
Dubai has set a number of world records, from building the world's tallest hotel - the JW Marriot Hotel Marquis Hotel, which stands at 355.35 metres - to the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, a stunning 828 metres tall. Dubai is also the home of the largest water screen projection in the world, located at Dubai Festival City, which features an 893-metre light projection.
TRIP OF A LIFETIME
For tourists and residents alike, Dubai is a fun place, packed to the brim with theme parks, resorts, and sights galore to enjoy, either on a holiday or on a staycation. From the Dubai Parks and Resorts to Dubai Safari Park and the Atlantis, the emirate never ceases to provide new forms of leisure and comfort.
HASSLE-FREE TRAVEL
Taking a step forward in terms of public transportation, Dubai unveiled the Metro back in 2009, and in the 10 years since, it has accommodated two lines, with a third under construction, and a tram to take you through Jumeirah. These automated, driverless trains have done wonders for residents and tourists alike, providing affordable, safe and sustainable transport, without having to worry about traffic.
SHOPPERS' PARADISE
With over 72 malls spread across the emirate and eight more planned for the future, there are many options for tourists and residents alike to enjoy a thrilling shopping experience. It is no wonder that Dubai is one of the world's best destinations for retail services, ranging from boutiques and luxury designer brands, to everyday streetwear. From smaller places like Mercato Mall, to the dominating Dubai Mall, you will be able to find what you need and more.
NEW FACES IN THE CITY
One of the many ways Dubai has changed is in terms of its man-made developments, from Bluewaters Island to Dubai Maritime City. Ain Dubai, the world's tallest observation wheel, will be opening in 2020, just in time for the Expo 2020 opening date. Visitors will be able to get a bird's eye view of the city from a height of 250 metres.
Tolerance and safety
According to the World Economic Forum, the UAE has been ranked as one of the safest countries in the world, based on the cost of crime and violence for business and the reliability of police and ambulance services. Those living in the UAE understand etiquette and behaviour expected, and many feel comfortable on the streets of Dubai, thanks to swift and efficient justice system.
Tolerance, too, is well-practiced in this nation. Dubai is an open-minded place thanks to the influx of multiple cultures and ethnicities. Aptly titled, 'The Gateway to the World', Dubai offers a unique experience to those looking to meet new people and explore new cultures, and to residents who have grown alongside Dubai's melting pot of nationalities.
