A train conductor in New York was feted for returning $9,000 (Dh33,000 approx) in cash left behind on a train by a commuter and said he was interested in rewards for his honest deed.
The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) conductor, Jerry Savino, spotted a large folder lying unattended on a train out of Hempstead on Thursday evening and opened to discover it contained 90 crisp $100 bills inside. "We find things on trains every day. I saw a lot of paperwork, that was a clue that it probably wasn't anything nefarious going on," MSN quoted Savino as saying.
The 18-year LIRR veteran handed the package to Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) cops at Jamaica Terminal, who tracked down its owner. MTA Police Deputy Chief, Joseph Martelli, said the owner of the money asked not to be identified but was "excited but desperate and appreciative member of our riding public".
While LIRR president, Phil Eng, said Savino returning the cash safely was an example of the agency's commitment to customer service. Eng also noted that there are security cameras on LIRR train cars, which further help keep any misplaced stacks of cash secure.
