Company buses with a capacity of 50 passengers or over and trucks are not permitted to ply on the capital's internal roads during the peak traffic hours from 6.30am to 9am.
This will be effective from Sunday, August 28, coinciding with the start of the new academic year.
The Traffic and Patrols directorate of Abu Dhabi Police issued this decision on Thursday, as part of prioritising the traffic safety strategy to make the roads safer.
Brigadier Ali Khalfan Al Dhahiri, director-general of central operations at the Abu Dhabi Police, said the move is aimed at making it easy for students to get to school, and curb the risks caused by heavy trucks.
He urged all company bus drivers and truck drivers to abide by the decision, as there will be strict surveillance on all internal roads and highways; violators will also face stringent penalties.
Brigadier Al Dhahiri stressed on the importance of boosting the community's partnership in protecting students from traffic accidents. "The plan devised to ensure traffic safety will be implemented in collaboration with the Department of Municipal Affairs and other strategic partners of the Abu Dhabi Police," he said.
The plan will include intensifying police traffic patrols on internal roads and highways, enlightening drivers on adherence to the traffic streamlining, and their awareness of traffic rules.
