Mediatek will be behind around 160 million smartphones reaching the Middle East, Africa and Turkey markets this year, according to a top executive of the company said.
The Taiwanese company is the world's largest chipset suppliers by volume for smartphones and feature phones.
It's also the world's largest TV chipset suppliers. The company supplies chipset to smartphone manufacturers such as Sony, HTC, Innjoo, Touchmate, and Techno Mobile.
"Our total addressable market in the Middle East, Africa and Turkey will reach around 160 million units by the end of this year. We expect around 10 per cent growth next year," Rami Osman, MediaTek's director of corporate sales for the MEA region, told Khaleej Times during an interview at Gitex Technology Week, which concluded on Thursday.
Osman mentioned that some markets still have potential for feature phones but it is quite affordable if someone gets a reasonable smartphone at a price of $50. Telecom operators want to move from 2G to 3G connectivity and from 3G to 4G, he said, adding so these affordable phones will help operators to get rid of 2G network.
Talking about the Gitex 2016 event, he said that it is the company's third participation. "We like it because it's the main event in the region. It's best way to reach B2B customers around the region," he explained.
At the Gitex, MediaTek highlighted a wide range of its chipsets along with their underlying technologies and multimedia experiences.
"Gitex is a great opportunity for MediaTek to demonstrate its innovative chipset technology including features like Imagiq and MiraVision that deliver unparalleled user experiences to help Mobile device makers differentiate their products," he said.
He added that MediaTek is supporting regional Smartphone brands to test and validate their LTE-Advanced handsets on regional carriers' networks with VoLTE being one of the most important features that is available on all of MediaTeks' LTE platforms.
MediaTek showcased smartphones from various brands running MediaTek's chipsets featuring several of its newest flagship system-on-chip (SOC) platforms including the Helio X25, Helio X20 and Helio P10 as well as its most efficient LTE Cat 4 and Cat 6 solutions MT6737 and MT6750 respectively.
On the IOT front, MediaTek introduced its WiFi/BT/GSM development kits for IOT and wearables, MT2502 and MT7688.
