Abu Dhabi to host 2020 Fina world championship

Abu Dhabi - The UAE Capital beat out bids from Lima, Peru and Almaty, Kazakhstan to stage the event.

Abu Dhabi's status as a top sporting destination was reaffirmed after the UAE Capital won the right to host the Fina Short Course World Swimming Championships in 2020.
Fina, the international governing body meet in Kazan, Russia on Wednesday and announced that Abu Dhabi was voted and selected to host the Championships in five years time.
The UAE Capital beat out bids from Lima, Peru and Almaty, Kazakhstan to stage the event. Abu Dhabi will play host to the Championships as well as the Fina Convention.
Ahmed Al Falasi, Chairman of the UAE Swimming Federation, along with a delegation, attended the meeting in Kazan, on the sidelines of the 16th edition of the Fina World Championships which runs from July 24 to August 9.
The Championships is held every two years and Windsor in Canada will host the event in 2016. China's Hangzhou will play host in 2018, with Abu Dhabi welcoming the Championships in 2020. Doha, Qatar had hosted it in 2014.
The Championships will include 44 races, 22 for men and 22 for women.
The last time the UAE hosted the event was in Dubai in 2010.
Abu Dhabi hosted the Fina Hosa 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup, the second round of the 11-race calendar, in March this year. Frenchman Axel Reymond won the men's section, while Italian Rachele Bruni was the champion in the women's segment.
