A 60-year-old classic movie restored in 4K-resolution format will be shown today as part of the Indonesian Movie Week 2016 organised by the Consulate-General of Indonesia in Dubai, started on Friday.
Tiga Dara (Three Sisters), an award-winning Indonesian drama classic originally released in 1956, will be shown today at Vox Cinemas in Burjuman Mall.
Directed and produced by Usmar Ismail, considered the father of Indonesian cinema, the film follows the lives of three sisters who live with their father and grandmother after the death of their mother.
The film gained popular success, launched the careers of its stars and received Best Musical Arrangement at the 1960 Indonesian Film Week. Since then, Tiga Dara has been considered a classic of Indonesian cinema and inspired several remakes.
In 2015, Tiga Dara was restored and converted to 4K digital by Italian company L'immagine Ritrovata Laboratory.
"We restored the movie to show the progress and golden era of Indonesian cinema," Rizka Fitri Akbar from SAFilms told Khaleej Times. "Not only is Tiga Dara the first Indonesian film restored in 4K format, it is also the first Asian restoration movie shown to the public in 4K results."
"The picture and sound sharper, cleaner, with more complete details, which is not even visible in versions prior to 4K restoration," he added. Restoring the film took 17 months, at a cost of $300,000, according to Akbar.
