Casablanca, ET, Jaws, Gone with the Wind, Inspector Clouseau, Some Like It Hot, and Psycho are some of the greatest classic movies that entertained Abu Dhabi audiences this summer. And the show is not over.
On September 1, from 7.30pm at Iris on Yas island, another great classic will be screened: The Apartment, Billy Wilder's 1960 black and white film. Starring Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine and Fred MacMurray, the movie proved both a commercial and critical success, nominated for 10 Oscars and winning five, including Best Picture, as well as grossing $25 millions at the box office.
Still a hilarious comedy, the movie's 'crescendo' plot is based in New York, where an office employee, 'Bud' Baxter (Jack Lemmon) lends his Upper West Side apartment to four executives of his company for trysts, hoping for promotion.
"It's one of the best comedies ever made! I saw it about four times by now and it still makes me laugh," said Stephan Hutt, a German expat in Abu Dhabi.
"I've recently seen Some Like It Hot, another movie by Billy Wilder at Iris and I'm planning to go see The Apartment as well on Tuesday," he added.
Part of the Iris Movie Nights, The Apartment will be screened indoors on a specially installed large screen. There is no charge and no bookings required for the movie nights.
The programme started in June, and after a break during Ramadan, it continued after Eid.
According to the organisers, September is the last month, with only four films left to see after The Apartment: Breakfast at Tiffany's, Laurence of Arabia, Birds and My Fair Lady.
"Why classics? They live on. Classic movies never really get old. Lots of people still love them and there is no venue for them in Abu Dhabi," said Paul Estorffe, spokesperson for the Iris Movie Nights.
The programme will re-open in October with outdoors classic movie nights at Yas Marina.
