A five-year-old Emirati boy was killed after his mother unintentionally ran over him while driving her car out of her home.

According to a senior police officer, the tragic accident took place here at the Maamura area in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah late on Friday.

Col Arif Al Kaz, Chief of the Maamura Police Station, said the central operations room of the RAK Police was alerted of the mishap at around 7.45pm.

"The young Emirati boy, identified only as M.A.L., was reportedly run over by his mother while she was driving her car out of the main entrance of her house."

A traffic patrol, an ambulance, and paramedics were dispatched to the site in a record time, but the shocked and panicked mother had already rushed her son to the hospital.

"Unfortunately, the little boy could not make it and succumbed to the fatal injuries he received all over his body, particularly in his head, and he bled excessively, and died on the spot."

Col Al Kaz said the bodies concerned have been informed of the tragic action for completing the legal procedures as due. "We offer our deep condolences to the family on the sad demise of the boy."

Indicating, he said that such home-based run-over accidents are very here in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. "Such registered tragic and sorrowful incidents are very rare and cannot be a phenomenon."

Urging, he said all families need to be extra cautious while reversing, parking or driving their cars at home for fear that they might hurt little children unintentionally.

"Parking sensors and cameras are always helpful means whereas opening the car windows to get a better visibility and make sure that the way is clear also sounds important."

Informed sources told Khaleej Times that the funeral prayer will be offered at the Wadi Habib mosque early on Saturday after the Fajr or Dawn Prayer. "The little boy will then be buried at the Haqeel Cemetery thereafter."
