Two maids are facing a theft charge for allegedly stealing jewellery and valuables from a palace in Dubai. The defendants did not attend the first hearing of their trial in the Court of first Instance on Tuesday.
The two women, both Sri Lankans, are accused of stealing some jewellery and three smart phones belonging to their employer.
The two women, aged 34 and 31, were reported to the police after their supervisor caught one of them hiding something suspiciously in her room.
The 42-year-old Egyptian said she saw one of the accused trying to hide the valuables she had stolen. "I learnt from her that two other maids helped her in the theft. One of them had run away."
During police questioning, the two defendants reportedly blamed the theft on the absconding maid.
The next hearing is scheduled for October 11.
