This is the second year the Indian Consulate in Dubai is hosting the 'International Yoga Day', an initiative founded by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and now recognised by the United Nations. On June 18, World Trade Centre, Dubai, will be the venue of the International Yoga Day convention where Indian yoga guru Baba Ramdev is expected to put in an appearance and trot out a few lessons. Khaleej Times catches up with Indian Consul General Anurag Bhushan to find out more about this 'fit show'.
How have you prepared for the International Yoga Day in Dubai?
We started preparations much earlier this year - encouraged by the huge participation during our first event in 2015. This year's event is even more special to us, since it's being held under the patronage of Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, president of the UAE Olympic Committee; we also have the Dubai Sports Council as our partner. To build up the momentum, we have already had sessions with schools and corporates, and are having more in the run-up.
Why is it not being celebrated on June 18, and not 21 June, which is International Yoga Day?
We wanted more participation; June 18 is a Saturday and an off day for most in the UAE.
Do you agree yoga is getting popular in the UAE?
The participation of around 20,000 people across different nationalities last year has created a buzz on the benefits of yoga. With our publicity campaign widely launched through social media platforms, we anticipate a higher level of participation in comparison to the last year.
The convention is taking place during Ramadan. Is it okay for fast observers to attend?
There will be two sessions, so those who are fasting can attend the second one starting at 8pm.
Any tips for those going to attend this event?
Wear light clothes and don't eat much before coming for the yoga session. Try not to bring young children as it makes it difficult for others.
How do you feel about yoga being an Indian "brand"?
Well, I don't think of it as an Indian brand, but I believe yoga has gained a lot of popularity with the help of many Indian yoga gurus. The idea is not just to promote yoga as symbol of Indian civilisation but as an overall routine for better health and positivity.
Do you think the new approaches to yoga - Power Yoga, Hot Yoga - have moved away from the core of yoga?
We Indians believe in diversity: the more, the merrier. It gives flexibility to people to choose a style which suits them.
Do you practise yoga yourself? How much time you devote for it?
Actually, I had a back problem and yoga has really helped me. I do yoga on a regular basis and prefer doing it early in the morning. It depends on my schedule really, but I keep at least 30 minutes for it in a day. I keep motivating my family, friends and colleagues to include yoga in their daily routine to lead a healthy and happy lifestyle. For work-related stress, yoga helps magically. It is very important to make more and more people aware about its benefits so I keep sharing my experiences with everyone.
Which is your favourite 'Yoga Asana'?
I think Suryanamaskar for 20 minutes is the complete exercise for physical health; I also love doing meditation as it helps in concentration and relaxes the mind.
Why do you prefer yoga over other forms of exercises?
It's easy to practise yoga at home without spending lot of money. It helps shape the body (and making it flexible), losing weight and maintaining good health. It also helps in releasing tension and increasing concentration.
What's your message for those who've never tried yoga?
I would say, "Give it a try", and I am sure after trying yoga, one won't be able to resist it. It's an amazing therapy for body, mind and soul.
