Here are some the top films we think you should see in UAE cinemas this weekend.
Beauty and The Beast
What can we say about all these live-action Disney remakes? Long may they continue! While Beauty and the Beast is perhaps not one of our most childhood cherished pictures, there is still enough drama, intrigue and music to get us excited. The all-star cast doesn't hurt either. It would be difficult to find somebody who doesn't know the classic tale, but essentially it's all about appreciating inner qualities rather than physical appearance, which is a good message for us all, not just kids. Belle, played by Emma Watson, is a charming, hard-working young lady with an over protective father, Maurice (Kevin Klein). When Maurice goes missing, Belle charges after him only to find he has been taken prisoner by the town's former prince (now Beast) in the castle up on a hill. She negotiates a prisoner trade for herself and for some reason the Beast accepts. Spending time in a lonely castle, Belle and the Beast begin to find out about each other's past and dreams. Spoiler alert, there may just be romance on the cards. Oh and there are talking household appliances who sing songs. Can you tell it has been a while since we've seen this movie? Rotten Tomatoes gives it 67% Trivia: Ian McKellen plays the clock in this one. He turned down the role of the clock in the original animation.
Sleepless
Wow, how bad does this look? From the stilted dialogue to the formulaic plot, we're surprised Hollywood still goes in for this stuff. It's atrociously simple and offers nothing to the cinema landscape, not even escapism - it's so dreary. Jamie Foxx plays a divorced cop whose marriage to the force is stronger than any emotional relationship he can muster, except of course with his teenage son whom he sees once a week. What do you know, detective Foxx is pursuing a bunch of hardened drug criminals and, instead of just getting rid of the policeman thorn in their side, the gang decide to kidnap Foxx's son. Thus begins a tiresome chase through the underworld as upstanding officer Boy Scout goes Liam Neeson's Taken on them with little to no entertainment involved. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 19% Trivia: There is apparently a Tamil version of this film.
Before I Fall
Groundhog Day for the Twilight generation, Before I Fall's similarity to the Bill Murray comedy is uncanny, except you have to replace the comic actor with a mopey teenager and any laughs with biting commentary on high school's social hierarchy. The talented Zoey Deutch plays Samantha, a popular girl coming to the end of her high school career. Driving home from one of their final parties, Samantha and her friends are involved in a car crash. The next thing Samantha knows she wakes up to find it is the morning of the day of the accident and everything has returned to normal. Destined to live out the same day in perpetuity, Samantha dedicates her time to improving others' lives. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 67% Trivia: The movie was filmed in 24 days on a budget of $4million.
Nocturama
Hipster kids turn terrorists? That's the plot of this French picture that has been receiving rave reviews across the board. A group of young people, tired of society, plan a bomb attack in Paris before taking shelter for a night in a shopping centre. The movie follows the fallout in the group dynamic once everything goes down. It's slick, well acted and has subtitles. You know we are going to love this. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 80% Trivia: Some of the film was shot guerilla style.
