More than 2,000 taxis of the Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC) of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) have been fitted with sensors which automatically operate taxi metres. By the end of this year, all the 3,914 taxis of the fleet will be operating with such sensors.
Mansour Rahma Al Falasi, Acting CEO of RTA’s DTC, told Khaleej Times said the sensors’ installation project in taxis started in mid-2013. “As of now, two-thirds of the fleet have already been operating with sensors expected to bring down customer’s complaints to five per cent.”
The sensor-fitting project is one of the most outstanding projects undertaken by the corporation, which automatically operates the meters when there is a passenger in the taxi. “In case the driver fails to operate it for any reason, whether because of forgetfulness or deliberately not switching it on, the sensors will automatically switch on the metre, thus, eliminating all unacceptable practices.
Some 500 taxis were fitted with the sensors initially. The project will be completed by the end of this year and the percentage of customers’ satisfaction is expected to go beyond 82 per cent.
DTC will evaluate the impact of its application based on satisfaction of customers, drivers and the community and increase operational revenue and reduce complaints.
All parties can submit their suggestions and enquiries by contacting the call centre of the RTA on 800-9090 where they can register their complaints and suggestions.
Among others, the project aims at controlling taxis, ensuring rights of the customers, reducing complaints and negative remarks related to drivers, and maintaining operational and technical efficiency. It also plans to introduce a mechanism to communicate with the drivers in emergencies, crises, disasters and accidents.
