The Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi has commenced work on the Abu Dhabi - Al Shahama main road (E10) widening project, which will see the addition of a fifth lane in both directions to the existing four-lane road.
The move is in response to the growing demand for superior transport infrastructure and as part of the Abu Dhabi Surface Transport Master Plan (STMP).
The Dh85-million, 16-kilometre long project is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2014. The road runs from Sas Al Nakhl to the border of Abu Dhabi International Airport Interchange (9 kilometres), and then from Yas Island Interchange to Al Shahama (7 kilometres). The main road will be widened with a fifth lane in each direction by narrowing the median by approximately 3.5 metres in each way. The median will be landscaped once the project is complete.
According to the DoT, the Abu Dhabi-Al Shahama main road widening project is just one of the key projects being undertaken to enhance the world-class traffic infrastructure that will support the objectives of socio-economic development emirate-wide by building an integrated and sustainable road network that will address the existing and future needs of the public.
The DoT also conducted several studies to find the best possible approach to implement the project and achieve its objectives. Results showed a great need to widen the existing road by adding a fifth lane on each direction to accommodate forecasted future demand, as this main road links various strategic areas between Abu Dhabi Island and Abu Dhabi International Airport and Al Shahama, all of which are witnessing wide-scale urban development.
The DoT is implementing this project by working closely with various strategic partners such as Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC), Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA), Abu Dhabi Police and Abu Dhabi Airports.
