T.P. Ibrahim, a driver with Dubai Transport Corporation, is the latest reported victim of these theives. Ibrahim (34) who hails from the southern Indian State of Kerala, was severely beaten up by the assailants when he tried to stop the robbery attempt in his room. Ibrahim who was admitted to Rashid Hospital with several fractures on his legs and requires further surgery, finally travelled to India last night to undergo surgery at an affordable cost.
According to Ibrahim, the incident took place in the early hours of July 30. "I woke up early at about 2am as I had to go for work in the morning shift. When I returned from the bathroom I saw a stranger in the room trying to steal my mobile phone and wallet. When I tried to stop him, four others who must have been waiting outside the room, jumped on me and beat me up," he said.
"They beat me up with some kind of heavy metal on my legs and on other parts of my body. When I cried for help, an Iranian national who lives next door came to my aid but they hit him also on his hand. When we shouted for help, the men ran away," he narrated.
"We reported the case to Muraqqabat police station and a team rushed to the spot. They found one mobile phone lost by one of the assailants and they have taken it as a proof. The miscreants were talking in Sinhalese which leads us to suspect that they are all Sri Lankan nationals," he said.
Ibrahim hails from Kannur District in Kerala and was working in Dubai for the past 16 years. The residents in Al Shaab area earlier complained that a gang had been causing trouble for the residents at regular intervals. But, no arrests have been made by the police to date.
In a shocking example of mindless vandalism earlier, atleast 17 cars in an open parking area were damaged by unknown miscreants on May 31. The residents were in a shock following the incident.
