Addressing a Press conference yesterday, Eng. Al Waleed Bin Khadem, Director-General (DG) of Sewa, noted: “The UAE is considered among the highest per capita water consumers in the world.”
He added: “Although the government is making tremendous efforts to provide fresh water to people through desalination and conserving underground water, there’s still a strong role that we all can play to conserve this vital source.”
To be launched officially from today, the water and energy conservation campaign is aimed at promoting sustainable use of water and energy in the emirate. Through the campaign, Sewa intends to change the attitude of residents towards water consumption and educate people not to take this vital natural resource for granted.
Ibrahim bin Demas, Director of Distribution and Transmission Commission at Sewa, said the conservation of energy would contribute a great deal in maintaining the balance between the production and consumption during the summer time when the energy capacity is raised to its maximum level.
The Sewa campaign will also focus on enhancing awareness of residents in the old residential areas with the highest consumption of energy.
The campaign involves educating the members of the public by distribution of leaflets and stickers. “In September, the campaign will move to schools,” bin Demas informed.
Issam Al Mulla, director of Water Distribution Commission at Sewa, said that during the campaign, engineers and technicians would be visiting residential and commercial building in all parts of the emirate to educate the residents about the ways of water and power conservation, with focus on the importance of cleaning water tanks in buildings and schools.
