The Grand Millennium in Dubai’s Tecom district has been in the news lately for a spate of innovative hospitality initiatives — the Monday ‘Italian Night’ (7.30 to 11 pm) at Dante, its ristorante Italiano, being just one of them. The idea is that, for a fairly reasonable price tag — Dh169 — one gets to sample a wide array of Italian fixes, along with a glass of bubbly or house beverage.
The ristorante’s name is a nodding tribute to the spirit of the great 14th century poet Dante, whose The Divine Comedy helped establish Tuscan as the precursor to the modern-day Italian language. (Not surprisingly, Dante — the restaurant this time — offers a fair bit of wholesome, simple fare from Tuscany.)
The Italian Night spread includes signature stuff like tuna fish salad, spaghetti bolognaise, sautéed veal escallop with white wine, tiramisu/ panna cotta, alongside live pizza and pasta stations. The quality is excellent, and the courteous restaurant staff (discreetly) ensures that the buffet holders are always well-filled.
The lovely al fresco seating, set to strains of Italian music, deserves a special mention in this weather — particularly if you are looking for a cosy romantic evening out fortified by uncomplicatedly delicious food.
The downside of the Italian Night buffet would probably be that the finer nuances of Italian cuisine — if you are a discerning foodie, that is, who seeks to treat every dining experience as a learning one — would be missing.
If that be the case, we recommend you try the à la carte, which is more thoughtfully defined, and you savour standalones to truly figure out the origins of the gastronomic route.
However, if, on a Monday evening (I’d like to throw in “after a hard day’s work” for good measure), you’d like nothing more than digging into elemental — and varied — Italian food without being fussy about history and ethnicity, then the buffet table at Dante is where you should be headed for.
If the literary Dante happens to be looking down from up there, a copy of The Divine Comedy in hand, he’d probably be reading out from the section titled ‘Paradiso’ and smiling to himself.
In seven words: Be charmed by the Italian culinary art
What we liked: The decor and the food
What we didn’t like: The mozzarella and tomato salad was not as fresh as you’d get them in Tuscany
Restaurant best for: Laidback fine dining
Cost for 1 (Italian Night): Dh169
Did you know: The literary Dante is called the Father of the Italian language
