Dr Michael Apa is an award-winning US cosmetic dentist, and the founder of Apa Aesthetics in Dubai. He spends a lot of time travelling and juggling businesses in two different cities, but says he's extremely fortunate to have a wife and family that support him and understand what it takes to accomplish what he wants to do. Here are some of the key things that help him attain a working work-life balance
Stay fit
Whenever or wherever I travel, I make sure to schedule in my workouts. Working out, for me personally, is all about keeping my mind and body healthy and energised. As long as I can get a good 45-60 minutes of uninterrupted training, I feel it clears my head, shakes off the cobwebs of jet lag, and gives my body energy to last throughout my day. It's absolutely critical in maintaining my kind of schedule.
Be present
When you are juggling companies in two different cities, staff, patients, problems, etc, it's important to be present. Present at work, in each conversation, and especially present at home. It's a blessing to be busy doing what you love, and it's easy to lose focus on what's really important and who's important in your life. Being present at every moment to take in what's going on and to give attention to those who deserve it.
Save a good Netflix series for when you can enjoy it
My life consists of not only intensely focusing on when I'm doing someone's teeth, but also flooded with decision-making. When I get a weekend, I stay up late at night with my wife, while everyone else in my world is sleeping, and binge-watch a good Netflix series. It really allows my mind to escape and not focus on anything other than the story I'm watching.
The Hamptons...
I'm a New Yorker, and for us New Yorkers, we have the Hamptons. it's a stretch of beach and ocean in the northeast of the US that settles the soul. We have a home out there, which gives us a chance to do the things we love. I play tennis, swim, play with my cars and, early in the morning, I get a cup of coffee and go sit in the sand and watch the ocean. It puts a lot of things into perspective.
Hire the right mentality
You need to hire good people to be extensions of you, and work like people invested in the business not employees. Good staff can make or break my life. If I can delegate, everything becomes seamless. When I have to look after every detail, it doesn't leave time for me to do my real job, which is to be a dentist.
Keep your soundtracks fresh
Music is a big part of my life. It inspires me, energises me and can take me out of any mood and just feel good. The trick is to keep your playlist new, and take the time to make new ones. I'll make a new one at least every season. I keep headphones in my ears on my way to work, if I'm walking somewhere, or even if I have a minute to sit at my desk. It's my form of meditation; it will get me through the day's issues and gives me a second to reset.
