Ahmed Abdullah Al Hosani won bronze in the boys under 63kg category of the taekwondo competition at the 6th Children of Asia International Games & Sports, Sakha, Russia.
Al Hosani entered the semifinal beating Mohammed Bushari of Indonesia 6-3 but was knocked out in the semis by a Russian opponent 0-6. The UAE lad clinched the medal by virtue of being a semifinalist. Hosani's teammate Hassan Al Masmari lost 0-26 to another Russian taekwondoka in the preliminary round of the under 55kg section earlier on Tuesday evening.
Abdullah Hatem, the taekwondo coach of the side, said: "One medal which was unexpected and our taekwondokas led by Al Hosani is a good sign for the future of the sport in the UAE. Saeed too promised a lot earlier but we have to overcome some basic shortcomings during our next phase of training."
Yousef Sarwash, athletics coach, said: "The best timing we achieved in the Games was by Mahra Abdul Raheem who recorded 2 minutes and 51 seconds on Monday evening in the girls 800m. She displayed talent and is likely to do well in the forthcoming events including the GCC Youth Games in the UAE in September.
"We also saw Abdullah Al Ali clock 57.28 seconds in the boys 400m where his determination to do well in international competition was evident."
The participation in the Games is part of the programme charted by the UAE NOC for future event and the nation should be in a position to achieve medals at the GCC Youth Games 2016, the 3rd Asian Youth Games in Indonesia 2017, and the Argentina School Olympic Games 2018.
The UAE performed reasonably well in archery, shooting and swimming at the Sakha event which concludes on Sunday. The table tennis team performed well with Abdullah Al Baluchi finishing fourth in the boys singles.
, and in the boys doubles along with Salah Al Baluchi.
