The family counselling section of the RAK Courts has processed 890 family disputes this year so far.
These are compared to 899 registered over the same period last year, according to Sheikha Al Breiki, head of section, RAK courts. "Up to 285 of these were settled in an amicable way, but 225 were hard to resolve and were referred to the court," she said.
"These are compared to 316 family disputes referred to the court last year, and 218 amicably settled over the same period."
She added that the counsellors of the RAK Courts have managed to settle 30 to 40 per cent of the family disputes registered. "The growing awareness among the public has helped resolve many of these family disputes.
"The section has recently recruited a professional counsellor who speaks English, Urdu and Arabic fluently to help tackle the disputes of expat families," she said. "This proved to be a better replacement for the translators."
The RAK judiciary department started a separate building for the family court, in line with the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince of Ras Al Khaimah and Chairman of the Judiciary Council.
Dr Ahmed Mohammed Al Khatiri, chairman of the RAK Courts, said the new premises will give more privacy to families and keep their disputes aside of criminal lawsuits. "The new centre is open on two shifts to better handle family disputes at the most suitable time for the disputants."
The court has also launched 24 new electronic services, including the application for urgent maintenance. Dr Khatiri stated that the RAK courts department will open a new building for child visitation by the end of March 2018.
