Indian master chef Sanjeev Kapoor surprised some of the labour force in Abu Dhabi with a gourmet meal on the Islamic New Year on Thursday.
The initiative came from the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA), which "challenged" the renowned chef to prepare 200 meal packets for construction workers, office boys, drivers and cleaners in the Capital, to help them celebrate the Islamic New Year.
"We are actively engaged within the community throughout the year and lead a number of initiatives here to make people's lives better," said Mouza Al Shamsi, acting executive director of Marketing and Communication at TCA.
"It is important for us to recognise everyone who contributes to making Abu Dhabi such a vibrant and welcoming place and we are delighted to partner with such a talent as Sanjeev Kapoor to make the Islamic New Year even more special for some of the needy in our society," she added.
Kapoor, who has several restaurants worldwide and who opened his first gourmet dining restaurant in Abu Dhabi last year - Signature - prepared the 200 meal packets in his restaurant's kitchen, which were then distributed to the workers with the help of the restaurant's staff and TCA's Corporate Social Responsibility team.
The meal included Signature's mild spiced biryani named Murgh Parda Biryani.
"I feel humbled and happy to be involved with this occasion and would like to wish you all a very happy and prosperous new Islamic Year. As a token of gratitude to everyone who has supported us, on this auspicious day," said Kapoor.
