The Dubai Municipality has dispelled rumours about dangers of wearing LED shoes which originated from social media websites. According to a statement posted by the civic body on its social media pages, the latest rumour claimed 17 people had been hospitalised after receiving electric shock to their heads from the LED shoes they wore.
The news is neither accurate nor specific, the municipality said, noting that the website is illogical and there is no scientific or trusted sources supporting the claim. It did not name the site from where the rumour originated. The civic body pointed out that the distorted news did not specify the name of the country where the incident took place or the hospital where the affected people were admitted. "Also the structure of the words is weak and implies the news came from unofficial sources," it noted.
The municipality called on the public to verify the source and accuracy of such news with health warnings before spreading them on social media.
It clarified that there is no official, either local or international, information about the dangers of the shoes that use LED lights.
"The Dubai Health Authority was contacted about this matter and they informed us that there are no injuries or cases where these shoes caused any harm," the civic body assured. It also pointed out that any stray incident if reported may not mean that all such products are defective since accidents could also result from improper use of the products.
If the product of any brand is found defective, it said, that will be recalled. The civic body also cautioned consumers to apply basic safety regulations for LED shoes like other similar products.
"The shoes contain battery that is similar to a cellphone's battery," it said, asking consumers to use appropriate chargers.
"Children must be monitored to make sure they do not mess with the shoes' electronic parts. The shoes must be regularly checked to ensure safety and the disposal of the product in case it is defective or not working properly," it added.
