A labourer has been sentenced to three months in jail for molesting a woman as she entered a lift in a shopping centre.
The 27-year-old Indian man has been accused of groping the Filipina in a centre in Deira while he was drunk. He has also been ordered to be deported by the Court of First Instance. The court ordered him to pay a Dh2,000 fine for consuming alcohol without a licence.
The 35-year-old complainant said in the investigation that the incident took place at around 9.20pm on May 29.
"It happened near the loading area. He was standing by the lift."
She claimed that he groped her as she was about to walk into the lift and it was obvious he did it intentionally.
The woman walked out immediately while he stayed in the lift.
She screamed for help from the security guard who arrived few minutes later, and they called the police when she told him about the incident. In the meantime, the accused tried to flee the place by pressing the buttons leading to the upper floors.
The defendant admitted when questioned by the police and in the public prosecution investigation to having consumed liquor that day.
He also confessed that he touched the woman but claimed he did it by mistake.
The verdict may be appealed within 15 days.
