Designer Manish Malhotra, known as 'Bollywood's go-to designer', hosted a preview of his next collection, 'Tales of Indulgence' in Mumbai last Wednesday. The full collection will be showcased next Sunday (August 20) at Lakme Fashion Week which starts this Wednesday.
Manish is the finale designer of the event and it is a sort of double whammy for him as he was also the finale designer for India Couture Week just two weeks ago. His couture collection, 'A Sensual Affair' was all about grandeur where volume was key to every design.
At Lakme Fashion Week things will be sleeker. What is interesting is both collections have a western feel in terms of shapes, be it the ball-gowns of his couture collection or the cocktail dresses of the Lakme Fashion Week.
"My LFW collection is much different in terms of silhouettes - it's younger, more colourful, more black - a colour that I've never used this extensively before for women. With this collection, we've taken a step forward in terms of innovation and design by introducing bespoke suits for men - a bespoke tailoring service that will also be available at our flagship stores in Mumbai and New Delhi. For women, the collection will have evening-wear and cocktail dresses in myriad fabrics, including handcrafted detailing and embroidery."
There is no question that there is a very fun and youthful feel to Manish's latest collection, which was designed using the Apple IPad pro. Manish is known for his sketches- and he always does all his own sketches. "The idea of the collaboration was also to move away and reduce the usage of paper and take the digital leap. It's our way of contributing to a greener environment," explains Manish.
The designer, who recently turned 50, believes that fashion and technology have a very special relationship; last year he presented a virtual reality fashion show. With a social media following of almost three million Instagram followers there is no other Indian designer with Manish's digital reach.
The showstopper has become a signature part of this celebrity designer's runway shows and to find out which actor will close his show on Sunday we will need to follow him @manishmalhotra05. Though with Kareena Kapoor being the face of Lakme, the title sponsor of the fashion week, it would be safe to assume that she will be part of the show.
At the recent ICW finale he had both Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh walk the ramp. "There has been a beautiful blend between fashion and technology today, making the fashion industry more accessible to the millennials and fashion-conscious generation. Today, it does not matter which part of the world an outfit is created in; there may be a consumer for it across the world, many time-zones away. It is no longer just about seasons, for a label it is about analysing consumer preference. A classic example of this was my deep blue lehenga worn by Deepika Padukone at India Couture Week a few years ago. Young brides saw it up on social media and two days later we had an overwhelming amount of orders for blue lehengas. That's the power of technology."
And after Mumbai it is Dubai next as Manish Malhotra will be showcasing here at the end of September at Design One. This show will showcase a more classic Manish Malhotra collection. "My collection at the exhibit will be a juxtaposition of traditional with contemporary, a DNA that my brand stands for. With the futuristic approach of bringing modernist element into Indian wear, this collection will see exploration of silhouettes and craftsmanship techniques."
Manish makes frequent visits to Dubai, which he calls  his second home - and hopes to have his own flagship in the city in the near future. And in-between all these shows Manish has not turned his back on his first love - movies - as he is simultaneously working on David Dhawan's Judwa 2 which has Varun Dhawan and Jacqueline Fernandez in the lead. "My creativity doesn't stop at just a particular collection. I'm always on the go trying to move beyond the typical design-process, trying to bring something extraordinary on the runway."
